Kara, the Dhanush-starrer that released in theatres on April 30, is heading to Netflix on May 28 — less than four weeks after its theatrical run began. The official listing is already live on the platform’s catalogue.

Directed by Vignesh Raja and co-written with Alfred Prakash, Kara is a period heist action thriller set in the early 1990s. Dhanush plays Karasaami, a small-time thief from Ramanathapuram who is caught during a failed robbery by DSP Bharathan, escapes, and attempts to leave crime behind. He starts a small mess business with his wife Selli — played by Mamitha Baiju — and tries to build an ordinary life. Poverty, then a corrupt bank manager named Muthu Selvan, pulls him back in.

When Karasaami returns to his village to secure land documents for a bank loan, he finds his father Kandhasaami drowning in debt. The bank threatens to seize their ancestral land. His father dies of grief. The family is denied even the right to bury him on their own land. That humiliation is the pivot — Kara decides to rob the bank.

What follows is a Robin Hood arc: Kara and his associates Murugesan and Kasi target corrupt banks, recovering money and land documents that have been exploited from poor villagers. DSP Bharathan closes in. Muthu Selvan, the corrupt bank manager, quietly profits from the chaos and manipulates both sides. The film resolves on Kara fulfilling his father’s final wish — burying him in their ancestral land — before walking away from crime into agriculture.

The Cast and Crew

Mamitha Baiju, the Malayalam actress who has built a strong cross-industry presence in recent years, leads opposite Dhanush.
