Kara Box Office: Dhanush’s Heist Thriller Hits ₹50 Crore Milestone

· 1 min read · No comments

The heist thriller Kara, starring Dhanush and Mamitha Baiju, has completed nine days in theatres with a worldwide total of ₹51.35 crore. Directed by Vignesh Raja, the film managed a steady first week, but now faces a tough climb to reach its break-even point.

Domestically, it has performed best in Tamil Nadu, contributing ₹27.35 crore, with the Telugu states adding ₹9.12 crore. Kerala and the rest of India have been slower, with collections there yet to cross the ₹1 crore mark.

The break-even picture

While ₹50 crore is a notable figure, the film is working against a reported ₹100 crore budget. Its worldwide distributor share so far is about ₹24.43 crore — a theatrical recovery of just under 49 percent against a break-even value of around ₹50 crore. To get there, it will need strong holds over the next couple of weeks, and with momentum slowing, the second weekend is shaping up as the decisive period.

Where it ranks

Despite the financial challenge, Kara sits among the higher-grossing Tamil films of 2026 so far, currently in fifth place. Its 1990s setting and the performances of Mamitha Baiju and Suraj Venjaramoodu drew praise from critics, though that hasn’t yet fully translated into the ticket sales needed to offset its costs.
