After a twelve‑year stretch without a single box‑office hit, Suriya finally delivered a massive success with his latest film Karuppu. Directed by RJ Balaji and produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, the movie vaulted to the top of the Tamil charts in just four days, becoming the first of Suriya’s films to cross the ₹ 150 crore mark. Within fifteen days of release, Karuppu had amassed more than ₹ 300 crore worldwide, a figure that places it among the very few Tamil productions to breach the ₹ 200 crore domestic threshold and the ₹ 300 crore global milestone. The film’s rapid ascent also propelled it into the top ten all‑time worldwide Tamil grossers, overtaking Vijay’s Varisu and ranking just behind titles such as 2.0, Leo and Jailer.

The reaction from the broader Indian film fraternity has been equally impressive. In a recent interview with Cinema Vikatan’s YouTube channel, RJ Balaji disclosed that Aamir Khan personally texted Suriya to congratulate him on the achievement, a message that Balaji himself received and shared with his team. The Bollywood star’s note was not the only one; Silambarasan (TR) also called to extend his wishes, and several senior directors reached out with their good‑byes. Balaji was candid about the film’s structure, admitting that the second half lacked a strong narrative but that the first half’s compelling story carried the audience through, allowing the movie to withstand the scrutiny of social‑media criticism.

Appreciation from all quarters and Suriya’s upcoming projects

Earlier, The Hollywood Reporter India had reported that Rajinikanth, another titan of Tamil cinema, had also phoned the Karuppu team. Rajinikanth’s signature encouragement—“Balaji, super… super… super, you have achieved it”—underscored the respect the project earned from industry legends. Despite the mixed critical feedback regarding the latter part of the film, the overwhelming audience response proved decisive, turning Karuppu into a cultural moment that reaffirmed Suriya’s star power.

While Karuppu continues to dominate the box‑office charts, Suriya is already looking ahead to his next venture, a family entertainer titled Vishwanath & Sons. The new project, produced by Sithara Entertainments, features an ensemble cast that includes Mamitha Baiju, Radhika Sarathkumar, Kaali Venkat and Raveena Tandon. Directed by Venky Atluri—known for Vaathi (2023) and Lucky Baskhar (2024)—the film is scheduled to hit theatres on 14 August 2026, promising to build on the momentum generated by Karuppu.

Karuppu’s unprecedented box‑office run, the congratulatory messages from Aamir Khan and Rajinikanth, and the anticipation surrounding Suriya’s upcoming release together illustrate a resurgence for the actor and a revitalized confidence in Tamil cinema’s ability to produce pan‑Indian blockbusters.
