Karuppu Event: RJ Balaji Compares CM Vijay’s Journey to Suriya’s “Mass” Return

The promotion for Karuppu reached a high point at a large event in Hyderabad, where director RJ Balaji drew a parallel between the political rise of C. Joseph Vijay and his own vision for Suriya’s film. Balaji’s speech went on to circulate widely online.

He opened by reflecting on the political shift in Tamil Nadu, noting that two years ago many had ridiculed a particular man and spread negative propaganda about him. “But that man believed in himself. He persisted with his dreams,” Balaji said, before acknowledging him as Chief Minister Joseph Vijay — using the story as a metaphor for overcoming the odds.

Bringing back a familiar Suriya

Speaking to fans, Balaji said he didn’t want to over-promise, but that his aim was to bring back the “Ayan” and “Singam” version of Suriya that audiences have long loved — a high-energy celebration of the star’s most familiar traits. He also had a pointed message for the online crowd, saying the film wasn’t made for those who dissect every frame on social media, but for people who simply enjoy cinema in a theatre.

Building toward release

Since the event, anticipation for the film’s May 14, 2026 release has grown, helped by Balaji tapping into the region’s current political mood. Advance bookings pointed to a strong opening across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, with the Suriya–Balaji pairing seen as one of the more unusual collaborations of recent years.
