The speculation was right. Tamil director Lokesh Kanagaraj, who built the Lokesh Cinematic Universe through Kaithi, Vikram, and Leo, makes his onscreen acting debut in Kattalan — releasing today, May 28. The makers have released an official poster confirming his character: Leo Cabral, appearing in a post-credits cameo role that connects the Marco universe with the LCU.
Industry insiders told DT Next that Kanagaraj agreed to play the role because he found it interesting and that “there is suspense woven into this character.” With the film releasing, they declined to elaborate further.
The character name Leo Cabral is significant. Leo is the name of the LCU’s Vijay-starrer from 2023, in which the protagonist’s alias is Leo Das — a former drug cartel member named Parthiban who assumed a new identity. Cabral, as a surname, is a new addition. Whether this is a new character within the LCU framework or an extension of existing mythology will only become clear after audiences sit through the credits.

Why This Matters for Both Universes
Earlier, the film DC directed by Arun Matheswaran was touted to mark Lokesh’s acting debut. However, Kattalan has pipped it to become the ace director’s first major on-screen outing.
For the Marco universe — built by Cubes Entertainments under Shareef Muhammed — a Lokesh Kanagaraj cameo is a significant cross-industry signal. Marco was a Malayalam film that crossed over into national conversation through sheer intensity. Kattalan, with Ravi Basrur’s score, Hombale Films distributing in Karnataka, and now a confirmed LCU connection through Kanagaraj’s appearance, is clearly being positioned for a similar trajectory.
Kattalan stars Antony Varghese Pepe, Dushara Vijayan, Sunil, Kabir Duhan Singh, Siddique, and Jagadish. It releases today in standard, IMAX, and EPIQ formats. The post-credits scene alone has become the talking point before a single public show has screened.
