Aadhav Arjuna Clarifies TVK Stance Amid Sanatan Row: “Not Against Hindus, But Hindutva”

· 2 min read · No comments

Tamil Nadu Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Aadhav Arjuna has triggered a fresh political “showdown” in the state after clarifying his party’s ideological stance on religion and Hindutva. Speaking in Chennai on May 14, 2026, Arjuna emphasized that while the TVK respects all religions equally, it remains firmly opposed to Hindutva and the caste system. The remarks follow a heated week in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, where the “Sanatan Dharma” debate resurfaced with new intensity.

The Ideological Pivot: Hindu vs. Hindutva

Aadhav Arjuna’s statement was a direct response to the ongoing controversy sparked by Leader of Opposition (LoP) Udhayanidhi Stalin and TVK MLA V.M.S. Mustafa. Arjuna sought to distinguish between the faith of millions and the political ideology often associated with the BJP.

  • Equal Respect: Arjuna stated, “TVK is against caste system, inequality, but we respect every religion equally”.
  • The Distinction: He clarified the party’s target by saying, “We aren’t against Hindus, but against Hindutva”.
  • Ideological Rivals: Arjuna previously labeled the BJP as the TVK’s “ideological enemy,” while describing the DMK as their primary “political enemy”.

Annamalai Leads BJP Backlash

The remarks drew immediate fire from Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai, who accused both the DMK and the TVK of harboring “hatred” toward Hindu beliefs. Annamalai took to social media to allege that the two parties were “two sides of the same coin,” using religious issues to distract from governance.

Annamalai further challenged the parties to be transparent during election campaigns. “If either DMK or TVK had the courage of conviction, they should have openly declared during their election campaigns that targeting Sanathana Hindu Dharma would be central to their politics,” Annamalai wrote on X. BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy echoed these sentiments, accusing the Vijay-led government of remaining silent while its leaders allegedly insulted religious traditions.

The Assembly Spark: Udhayanidhi and Mustafa

The current row began during the maiden speech of Udhayanidhi Stalin as the LoP in the new Assembly. On May 12, 2023, Udhayanidhi reiterated his 2023 call to “eradicate Sanatan Dharma,” claiming it is inherently divisive. TVK MLA V.M.S. Mustafa backed these remarks, stating that his party, which follows the ideals of Periyar and Ambedkar, had “entered the fray to abolish Sanatan”.

Mustafa later clarified that his party is “not against any religion,” yet the BJP has continued to target Chief Minister Vijay for the statements made by his cabinet members. As the TVK marks its first month in power, the administration faces a delicate balancing act between its secular “Dravidian” roots and the diverse religious sentiments of its voters.
