Mammootty has completed his portions for D55, the Dhanush-starrer directed by Rajkumar Periasamy — the filmmaker behind Amaran, which grossed over ₹300 crore at the box office in 2024. The film is targeting an October 2026 theatrical release, and its OTT digital rights have reportedly been sold for a record sum, though the platform that acquired them hasn’t been officially disclosed, per Reporter Network.
The combination of Rajkumar Periasamy’s post-Amaran credibility, Dhanush’s pan-Indian pull, and Mammootty’s presence in a key supporting role has clearly driven significant pre-release commercial interest. The OTT rights figure circulating in trade circles reflects how seriously platforms are treating this project even before a trailer or release date has been formally announced.
Mammootty Declined ₹35 Crore — Settled for ₹24 Crore
One of the more striking details in the trade conversation around D55 is Mammootty’s salary negotiation. The initial offer to him was reportedly ₹35 crore. Mammootty turned it down — not because the terms were unfavourable, but because he felt the amount was too high for the scope of his role. The fee was eventually settled at ₹24 crore.

The decision has drawn genuine admiration within the Tamil film industry, per Reporter Network. It is a rare thing for a star of Mammootty’s stature to voluntarily reduce his own fee, and the gesture has been read in Tamil circles as a sign of professional integrity rather than commercial naivety.
Journalist Venky, who had spoken about Mammootty’s role in an earlier interview, described it this way: “Mammootty sir said okay immediately after hearing the story. Malayalam artists all love Tamil cinema, and Mammootty is no different. The role in D55 is very powerful. He has fewer scenes, but it is an extremely powerful role.”
The detail about Mammootty’s immediate yes to the script is consistent with how he has approached Tamil projects historically — he tends to respond to material rather than to the commercial calculations around it.
The Full Salary Picture
The cast compensation figures circulating in trade accounts, per Reporter Network, show D55 as a high-budget production across the board. Dhanush, who is also producing the film through his own banner, is drawing ₹45 crore as the lead. Sai Pallavi, one of the two female leads, is reported to receive ₹12 crore. Sreeleela, who appears in a limited number of scenes, is reportedly receiving ₹3 crore. Director Rajkumar Periasamy’s fee is reported at ₹15 crore.
These figures are unverified by the production at press time and should be read as trade estimates rather than confirmed accounting.
The Film and Its Context
D55 is described as a large-scale action-emotional thriller produced by Dhanush himself. Sai Abhyankkar — who delivered one of the most praised scores of the year with Karuppu — composes the music, which immediately raises the sonic expectations for the film. Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela are both confirmed as female leads.
The Mammootty-Dhanush connection has a precedent: Dhanush appeared in a guest role in the Mammootty film Kammath & Kammath. D55 reverses that dynamic — Mammootty now steps into the Dhanush universe as a supporting player, with Rajkumar Periasamy directing both men in what appears to be a significant cross-industry production for 2026.

October is a strong release window — positioned ahead of Diwali, clear of the Onam corridor — and if Rajkumar Periasamy can replicate even a fraction of Amaran’s critical and commercial performance, D55 has the ingredients to be one of the year’s more anticipated theatrical events.
