The action-comedy Athiradi has opened strongly, with early estimates putting its first-day Kerala collection at over ₹5 crore. That marks the biggest opening day to date for both Tovino Thomas and Basil Joseph by a clear margin, and the film is on course for a double-digit worldwide opening even before paid premiere numbers are counted.
Strong word of mouth
After the first shows, reactions online were largely positive, with many viewers singling out the chemistry between Tovino and Basil as the film’s biggest strength. There was also plenty of buzz about a surprise cameo that reportedly drew big reactions in theatres, and clips of fan celebrations circulated on Instagram and X.
A new high for both leads
Directed by debutant Arun Anirudhan, the film’s numbers point to growing appetite for high-energy Malayalam entertainers aimed at younger audiences. For Tovino, the opening surpasses his earlier hits like 2018 and Minnal Murali, while for Basil Joseph it builds on the success of Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil and strengthens his standing as a lead.
With its May 14, 2026 start and several housefull shows, the film looks set for a healthy weekend, and the positive word of mouth around its pacing and the cameo should help it hold through Sunday.
