Patriot Box Office: Mammootty and Mohanlal Big Budget Actioner Drops Heavily

· 1 min read · No comments

The action thriller Patriot, which brought together Mammootty and Mohanlal, has had a disappointing run, with its worldwide collection standing at around ₹72 crore after eight days. Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the film opened to considerable hype but dropped sharply after its first weekend.

Weekday trends have been soft, and analysts now expect the lifetime gross to stay below ₹80 crore. Against a reported production budget of ₹125 crore, that makes for a difficult result, with the film recovering well under a third of its cost from the box office alone.

Reliance on non-theatrical revenue

The film’s heavy use of VFX and a large cast — including Fahadh Faasil and Nayanthara — pushed the budget to unusually high levels for Malayalam cinema. As a result, it now leans on OTT and satellite rights to offset the theatrical shortfall. Sushin Shyam’s soundtrack and the film’s technical work drew praise, but mixed reviews appear to have limited its wider appeal, and incoming releases are likely to reduce its screen count further.

Why the run cooled

While fans were glad to see the two stars share the screen, several viewers felt the screenplay lacked the emotional pull needed to sustain a long run, and its more complex narrative may have narrowed its reach among family audiences. Without the steadier holds seen in previous Mammootty or Mohanlal hits, the outlook for distributors has remained challenging as attention turns to the season’s upcoming releases.
