Actor Manjari Fadnis, known for Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, has drawn wide attention to the issue of cruelty against stray animals after sharing that a community dog named Mikey was killed inside her housing society. In an emotional video posted on June 9, 2026, she said the dog had been deliberately attacked, and called for stronger action against such offences.
Mikey, she explained, was a long-haired street dog who had been abandoned years earlier. Residents had cared for him since late 2019, taking turns to feed, bathe and groom him and arranging veterinary care. Fadnis described him as a happy, gentle dog, which made the loss especially hard for the neighbourhood.
How the case came to light
Concern grew when Mikey went missing from his usual spots. Residents put up notices, circulated messages in their group chats and questioned the security staff at the gates. According to Fadnis, a member of the society eventually admitted what had happened: Mikey had been attacked while sleeping near the basement parking and was later moved out of the building and dumped in a marshy area near a nearby riverbank.
Residents are now working with local police and search teams to recover his remains.
A call for stronger laws
In her message, Fadnis said the community intended to pursue legal action and that no animal should face such violence inside a residential complex. She argued that India’s current penalties for animal cruelty are too weak to deter offenders.
The post drew support from several film personalities, including Bhumi Pednekar, Vedhika and Dimple Hayathi, who reshared it and called for police accountability and stronger animal-protection laws. Some observers also noted that extreme violence toward animals can be a warning sign of a broader risk to a community.
On the work front, Fadnis was last seen in the crime thriller Pune Highway, which had a theatrical run in May 2025 before moving to streaming. Local police have begun looking into the matter, including the society’s management and security arrangements.
