Mohanlal has returned to audio performance with a special All India Radio (Akashvani) production, the play Kadamkathayile Virunnukaran. It marks his first professional recording at the studio since he received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
Produced by the Kochi station as part of the Akhila Kerala Radio Natakolsavam (All Kerala Radio Drama Festival), the play casts Mohanlal as the sole male lead — a role that asked him to convey emotion through voice alone.
A dedicated session
According to directors M.V. Sashikumar and N.S. Jayamohan, the actor approached the project with care, studying Muhammed Roshan’s script several times before recording and often asking whether a scene needed a different emotional tone. Kailas Menon handled the background score and sound design. During the session, Mohanlal reportedly grew emotional recalling how he listened to radio dramas with his mother as a child, and spoke of treasuring his earlier radio work, such as Jeevanulla Prathimakal.
Cast and broadcast
The play also features the voices of Maala Parvathi, Sshivada, Muthumani and Aditi Ravi. After the recording, the team presented Mohanlal with a pocket edition of the Bhagavad Gita and a collection of short stories, and reports suggest he plans to record another play for the Thiruvananthapuram station soon.
The Kochi station will broadcast the drama on the final day of the festival, May 17, at 9:30 PM, with a re-broadcast on May 18 at 1:00 PM.
