Short answer: The best Malayalam courtroom dramas win on argument, not volume. We ranked 12 films by how much of the case actually happens in court, from close procedure to satire and thrillers with a trial at the centre. Neru leads, and its official trailer from Aashirvad Cinemas bills it as an emotional courtroom drama.

How we ranked them

The order is ours. Films near the top spend real time on evidence, witnesses and hearings; the middle uses a trial as a frame; the last three are weaker fits, flagged in each Our take.

1. Neru (2023)

JioHotstar's synopsis sets it up simply: a former lawyer, Vijayamohan, takes on the case of a blind girl with unusual evidence. Mohanlal plays the lawyer, with Anaswara Rajan and Priyamani in the lead cast.

  • Director: Jeethu Joseph, co-written with Santhi Mayadevi
  • Cast: Mohanlal, Anaswara Rajan, Priyamani
  • Where to watch: JioHotstar (as of Oct 31, 2026)

Our take: Neru is the closest thing here to a procedural. It is patient about how a case is built and how it can fall apart, and it lets the arguments carry the tension instead of twists. If you want one film to understand what a Malayalam courtroom drama can be, start here.

2. Vaashi (2022)

Netflix describes two ambitious lawyers who end up on opposite sides of a big case and have to deal with what that does to them outside the courtroom. Tovino Thomas and Keerthy Suresh play the rival advocates.

  • Director: Vishnu G. Raghav
  • Cast: Tovino Thomas, Keerthy Suresh
  • Where to watch: Netflix (as of Oct 31, 2026)

Our take: Vaashi earns its high place because both sides get a real argument. Most courtroom films pick a hero; this one splits the sympathy between two lawyers and asks what winning costs each of them. It is also the most even-handed film here, and the one we would pick for a first watch after Neru.

3. Saudi Vellakka CC.225/2009 (2022)

SonyLIV's listing introduces Abhilash, 23, whose Gulf visa is within reach until a court summons for a long-pending case gets in the way. The case number in the title is the point: this is a film about how long a case can last.

Our take: No film on this list is better about delay. The drama is not a big speech but the years of hearings, adjournments and waiting that ordinary people sit through. Watch it when you want a courtroom film that feels like real life rather than a contest.

4. Nna Thaan Case Kodu (2022)

On JioHotstar's page, a reformed thief's act of self-defence puts him up against political leaders and starts what the platform calls a hilarious fight for justice. Kunchacko Boban leads.

  • Director: Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval
  • Cast: Kunchacko Boban
  • Where to watch: JioHotstar (as of Oct 31, 2026)

Our take: This is the best satire here because the jokes come out of procedure. The court is a real place in this film, with its own rhythm and its own absurdities, and the humour lands because it is so specific. It is a delight.

5. JSK: Janaki V v/s State of Kerala (2025)

The most recent film here is a legal thriller led by Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran. Its full title already names the case.

  • Director: Pravin Narayanan
  • Cast: Suresh Gopi, Anupama Parameswaran
  • Where to watch: ZEE5, reported (as of Oct 31, 2026)

Our take: JSK sits in the middle because it is a thriller first. The courtroom matters, but the film is built for momentum and big moments rather than slow legal detail. It suits viewers who came to the genre through Neru and want something faster.

6. Jana Gana Mana (2022)

Netflix's synopsis begins with the murder of a college professor, student unrest and a police investigation. The film then moves into a legal fight. Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu lead.

  • Director: Dijo Jose Antony
  • Cast: Prithviraj Sukumaran, Suraj Venjaramoodu
  • Where to watch: Netflix (as of Oct 31, 2026)

Our take: Jana Gana Mana is the loudest film here, and its courtroom stretch is built for big speeches rather than careful procedure. That makes it a crowd-pleaser more than a study of the law. It ranks below the quieter films for that reason, but it is the one most people remember.

7. Melvilasom (2011)

Sun NXT sums it up: a soldier, Ramachandra, is accused of killing Captain Verma, admits to it, and refuses to say why. The hearing is a court-martial. Suresh Gopi and Parthiban lead.

  • Director: Madhav Ramadasan, in his debut
  • Cast: Suresh Gopi, Parthiban
  • Where to watch: Sun NXT (as of Oct 31, 2026)

Our take: Melvilasom is almost entirely one room, and it is the purest courtroom film here after Neru. It is low on spectacle and high on argument, which is exactly why it has a following. We rank it seventh only because it is hard to find and feels like a stage play.

8. Oru Abhibhashakante Case Diary (1995)

Sun NXT's listing describes a man, Unni Thampuran, falsely accused of a serious crime, and a friend who believes he is innocent. Mammootty plays the lawyer, in a script by S.N. Swamy.

  • Director: K. Madhu
  • Cast: Mammootty
  • Where to watch: Sun NXT (as of Oct 31, 2026)

Our take: This is the oldest film here and the most mystery-shaped. S.N. Swamy, who also wrote the CBI films, builds it like a puzzle, with the courtroom as the place the answer comes out. It is a good bridge for fans of classic Mammootty investigation films. We could not find an official trailer for it, so there is no embed below.

9. Nirnayakam (2015)

V.K. Prakash directed this Bobby and Sanjay script, with Asif Ali and Nedumudi Venu in the leads. The Times of India reviewed it as a court-case film, and Onmanorama's look at the climax describes the grandfather, as petitioner, addressing the judge over his granddaughter's death. We will not give away the verdict.

  • Director: V.K. Prakash
  • Cast: Asif Ali, Nedumudi Venu
  • Where to watch: Not streaming on major platforms (as of Oct 31, 2026)

Our take: Nirnayakam is the most overlooked film here. Its courtroom climax runs on grief rather than clever tricks, and Nedumudi Venu makes that scene land. It sits above the last three because the case really is the story. We could not find an official trailer, so there is no embed.

10. Garudan (2023)

Garudan is billed as a crime thriller, and the court case is one strand of it. Suresh Gopi and Biju Menon lead, from a script by Midhun Manuel Thomas.

  • Director: Arun Varma, in his debut
  • Cast: Suresh Gopi, Biju Menon
  • Where to watch: Prime Video, with a subscription or to rent (as of Oct 31, 2026)

Our take: A weaker fit, and we are saying so up front. Garudan is a thriller with a case at its heart rather than a courtroom drama. We kept it because its legal fight matters to the story and because it is one of the more gripping films here. Watch it for the two leads, not for procedure.

11. Mukundan Unni Associates (2022)

JioHotstar describes Adv Mukundan Unni as a lawyer fired from a law firm for unethical conduct, who will do anything to succeed. Vineeth Sreenivasan plays him.

  • Director: Abhinav Sunder Nayak
  • Cast: Vineeth Sreenivasan
  • Where to watch: JioHotstar (as of Oct 31, 2026)

Our take: Another honest stretch: this is a lawyer satire and a dark comedy, not a courtroom film. Very little happens in front of a judge. It is here because no Malayalam film has a sharper view of the business side of law. Watch it after Nna Thaan Case Kodu if you want a darker kind of legal comedy.

12. Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel (2019)

Sun NXT's synopsis follows Balakrishnan, a lawyer whose stammer has held back his career, until things begin to change. Dileep leads.

  • Director: B. Unnikrishnan
  • Cast: Dileep
  • Where to watch: Sun NXT (as of Oct 31, 2026)

Our take: The lightest film on the list and the weakest fit. It is an action comedy with a lawyer hero, and the courtroom is mostly a backdrop. It sits last because the case matters less than the hero's journey. Fun, but skip it if you want law.

Where to start

For a serious first watch, pick Neru, then Vaashi. If you want something slower and more human, go to Saudi Vellakka. For laughs, Nna Thaan Case Kodu is the clear choice, with Mukundan Unni Associates as the darker follow-up. If you like old-school mysteries, Oru Abhibhashakante Case Diary is the one.
