Prashanth Neel Says Dragon Will Be ‘One of the Most Patriotic Films Ever’ — And Jr. NTR Is the Villain!

The Dragon teaser looked like another Prashanth Neel period action spectacle. Dark palette, large frames, the kind of visual grammar audiences now associate with KGF. Neel wants you to know that reading is wrong. Speaking ahead of the film, the director said plainly: “The teaser is just a setting. We probably will end up making one of the most patriotic movies ever seen.” That is not a description anyone had attached to Dragon before Tuesday.

The bigger revelation concerns Jr. NTR’s character. Neel described it as “the darkest character I have ever written” — a statement that carries weight from the man who wrote Rocky Bhai and Salaar. He went further: “We have cast the most expensive villain in the history of Indian cinema. That’s how we’re looking at it.” Jr. NTR, in other words, is not playing a hero with a dark edge. He is playing a villain. A pure one. For the RRR star, who has spent his career in heroic territory, that is genuinely new ground.

Three Years to One Scene

Neel said the character took three years to develop — specifically because of a single scene written at the end of the film. “It took us three years to reach a scene I wrote at the end of the movie, to validate why this character does what he does.” The construction of that justification, apparently, was the hardest part of the entire script.

He also addressed the visual similarity across his trilogy — KGF, Salaar, and now Dragon. “All three films might look similar because of the colour palette, but they tell different stories.” Dragon, he said, is the last film in the trilogy and the last time he will work in this genre. What comes after is a significant pivot: Neel has written a mythology-based story he has wanted to make for two decades. “After completing all my current commitments, I’ll eventually get to that.”

Dragon is produced by Mythri Movie Makers in association with NTR Arts and T-Series. The cast includes Anil Kapoor, Biju Menon, Rukmini Vasanth, Khushbu Sundar, Ashutosh Rana, Sidhant Gupta, and Guru Somasundaram among others. It releases June 11, 2027 — over a year away, with the conversation already at this pitch.
