The BCCI is reportedly preparing for a change in its limited-overs leadership. According to recent reports, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar and the selection committee are weighing a “one captain” policy across both ODI and T20 formats, aiming for more consistency in India’s white-ball sides.
The main focus of that plan is Shubman Gill, whom the board reportedly sees as the long-term choice to lead. He has already captained India in some white-ball games, and his consistency — along with a classical batting style he has adapted for the demands of T20 — has strengthened his case.
Samson and Iyer in the mix
Gill is the frontrunner, but he isn’t the only name. Sanju Samson has become a serious contender after the 2026 T20 World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament on the back of strong knockout performances. Shreyas Iyer is also in consideration, given his captaincy experience in the IPL and domestic cricket, though some selectors reportedly feel he needs to firmly secure his place in the T20I XI first.
A look to the future
The discussion comes amid a dip in form for current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title but has since struggled with the bat. The board is trying to balance fresh leadership with experience ahead of major events, including the 2027 ODI World Cup. A revamped structure is expected to be announced after the IPL season, in time for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.
