Superstar Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 Targeting September 11 IMAX Release

· 2 min read · No comments

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 is generating two separate conversations this week: a reported shift in release date to September 11, and buzz around an IMAX rollout that would give the film two weeks of exclusive large-format screens across India. Neither has been officially confirmed by Sun Pictures at press time.

On the release date, the September 11 window was first reported by Filmfare, citing a source close to the production. The date would position the film ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, delivering a natural four-day extended weekend across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Goa. The shift away from the original June 12 date — reportedly made to avoid a box office clash with Lahore 1947 and Awarapan 2, both targeting the Independence Day window — gives the film a solo run in what would be one of the year’s most commercially significant weekends.

On the IMAX front, industry buzz suggests Sun Pictures has contracted IMAX for worldwide screens, with two weeks of exclusive IMAX availability in India. IMDb’s technical listing for the film already includes IMAX 6-Track among its sound formats — a detail that lends the speculation some weight, though a formal IMAX partnership announcement from Sun Pictures has not materialised.

What We Know for Certain

Sun Pictures officially confirmed the shoot wrap on April 21, posting celebration visuals with Rajinikanth and director Nelson Dilipkumar. The film is in post-production. Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar reprise their roles from the original alongside Rajinikanth returning as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. The cast also includes S.J. Suryah, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Vidya Balan, with Fahadh Faasil among the additions to the sequel. Anirudh Ravichander returns on music, Vijay Kartik Kannan on cinematography, and R. Nirmal on editing.

Industry sources had previously indicated the technical team was exploring IMAX-friendly camera formats for key action sequences, signalling intent to prioritise the theatrical experience. A confirmed IMAX release would be consistent with that ambition.

September 11 with two weeks of exclusive IMAX screens would make Jailer 2 one of the biggest large-format releases Indian cinema has seen. The announcement, when it comes, will be worth watching.
