Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay Resigns Tiruchirappalli East Assembly Seat

Before taking charge as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, Vijay resigned his Tiruchirappalli East assembly seat. Ministers KA Sengottaiyan and P Venkataramanan submitted the resignation letter to the Legislative Assembly Secretary on his behalf.

Vijay had won from two constituencies — Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East — and was required to vacate one under the Representation of the People Act. By keeping the Perambur seat, he cleared the way to lead the state’s first multi-party coalition government, in what marks a shift away from the long-running Dravidian duopoly.

Sworn in at Fort St. George

On May 10, 2026, the actor was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, before heading to Fort St. George for his first day at the secretariat. In an emotional address, he reflected on his path from cinema to public life: “I do not come from a royal family; I was born to an ordinary assistant director.” He thanked his supporters for standing by him through the “hardships and humiliations” of his political transition and promised a government rooted in secularism and social justice.

Early pledges

In his first policy remarks, Vijay promised a transparent administration, including releasing a “white paper” to keep the public informed, and said he would avoid “closed-door” politics. He listed women’s safety, a strong anti-drug campaign and improved law and order among his early priorities.

With this win, Vijay joins the line of actor-politicians that includes M.G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa — and with his proven crowd-pulling power, attention now turns to how he translates that popularity into governance.
