Speculation about Hardik Pandya’s future at Mumbai Indians has grown louder after the team’s early exit from IPL 2026. Following a final-ball loss to Bengaluru in Raipur, trade rumours began to circulate, and they gathered pace when Pandya briefly unfollowed the MI account on Instagram. He restored it soon after, but fans and analysts read the episode as a sign of friction.
His own season added to the pressure: across eight innings he made 146 runs and took four wickets at an expensive economy of 11.90. Since his return as captain, MI have struggled — finishing last in 2024, missing the final in 2025, and crashing out in the group stage this year after losing eight of eleven matches.
Where he might go
The most talked-about possibility is a move to Chennai Super Kings. Cameras recently caught Pandya in a long conversation with CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan — an exchange that reminded many of Viswanathan’s meeting with Sanju Samson in 2025, shortly before Samson moved to Chennai.
Other franchises are reportedly interested too. Lucknow Super Giants are said to have offered him the captaincy, though MI’s high asking price — reportedly involving Nicholas Pooran — is a sticking point. Kolkata Knight Riders are said to view Pandya as a long-term India captaincy option, but are reluctant to part with players like Rinku Singh.
Pressure in Mumbai
Three seasons without a trophy have put the MI leadership under scrutiny, and the visible drift between Pandya and the franchise suggests an exit can’t be ruled out. Trade talks usually stay private, but the public hints have kept the cricket world watching ahead of what looks set to be a busy 2027 reshuffle.
