The building that explodes behind Rajinikanth in the Jailer 2 trailer was blown up for real, according to the film's action director Chethan D'Souza. In an interview, he said the blast was not CGI. It was shot practically and only lightly enhanced afterwards, and behind-the-scenes footage will be released now that the film is out.
Real blast, light touch-up
It is a notable claim at a time when audiences often assume big screen explosions are digital. Chethan's point is that Jailer 2 went practical for one of its key shots, and he plans to show it.
Until the BTS is out, the claim rests on his word. The footage will be the proof.
Less movement, more impact
Chethan also explained how he designed the action for Rajinikanth. The fights were planned around the character, he said, with the aim of creating big action moments out of minimal movement. He credited director Nelson Dilipkumar with a clear sense of the film's mass moments and how they sync with the music.
He also said Rajinikanth would humbly ask whether he was doing a move right and whether anything needed changing, and that the star's way of treating everyone as equals made the crew comfortable.
The road from Aavesham
Chethan, from Mangaluru, built his career in Kannada cinema on films such as Bhageera and Max. As we reported earlier, it was Aavesham that led him to Jailer 2, after Fahadh Faasil introduced him to Jithu Madhavan.
