Onam 2026 is shaping up as the most competitive Malayalam release window in recent memory. Three major films — Khalifa, I’m Game, and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit — are converging on the same weekend, with Khalifa and I’m Game both confirmed for August 20 and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit following on August 21. Three of Malayalam cinema’s biggest stars, three of its most anticipated directors, and one Onam weekend. The conversation about which film will emerge on top has already started.
Khalifa — Prithviraj and Vysakh Reunite After 16 Years
Khalifa is the most long-gestating of the three. Announced in 2021, the film marks the reunion of Prithviraj Sukumaran and director Vysakh — a combination that last delivered Pokkiri Raja together in 2010. Shooting began last year and is currently in its final schedule.

The film’s commercial appeal received a significant boost with the confirmation that Mohanlal will appear in a key role — playing Mambarakkal Ahmad Ali, the character identified as Prithviraj’s grandfather in the story. A Prithviraj-Mohanlal combination in a Vysakh action film, arriving on Onam weekend, is as commercially loaded a proposition as Malayalam cinema can construct.
Vysakh’s track record with mass action entertainers — Pokkiri Raja, Pulimurugan, Lucifer’s action sequences — gives Khalifa a specific identity: big, loud, crowd-pleasing cinema designed for exactly the kind of festive weekend it is targeting.
I’m Game — Dulquer’s Return to Mollywood
Dulquer Salmaan has been away from Malayalam cinema since King of Kotha in 2023 — a film whose underperformance was a genuine setback for his home industry standing. I’m Game, directed by Nahas Hidhayath of RDX fame, is positioned as the comeback that resets that narrative.

Nahas Hidhayath announced himself forcefully with RDX — a relentless, technically assured action film that built a strong audience. I’m Game reunites him with RDX actor Antony Varghese Pepe in a pivotal role while placing Dulquer at the centre of what is described as an action thriller. Tamil filmmaker Mysskin makes his Malayalam acting debut in the film. Jakes Bejoy composes, Jimshi Khalid shoots, and the action choreography is by Anbariv.
Wayfarer Films — Dulquer’s own production banner — is backing the film, which means the star has full creative and commercial ownership of this comeback. The August 20 release puts it directly against Khalifa, which is the most direct star-versus-star contest of the three.
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit — Nivin and Girish AD After Premalu
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit arrives with a different kind of anticipation. Nivin Pauly has been on a strong run — Sarvam Maya was widely received as a genuine return to form — and this film pairs him with Girish AD, the director behind Premalu, for the first time. That combination alone generates expectations.

Girish AD’s Premalu was one of Malayalam cinema’s most warmly received comedies of 2024 — a film that worked because of its specificity, its character warmth, and its understanding of a particular generation’s emotional register. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, with Nivin in what is described as his comfort zone, suggests a similar register. The August 21 release gives it a one-day buffer from the direct clash between Khalifa and I’m Game, which could work in its favour if the other two films split the mass action audience between them.
Who Has the Edge?
Each film is carrying a different kind of weight into the weekend. Khalifa has the biggest commercial architecture — Prithviraj, Vysakh, Mohanlal, and five years of anticipation. I’m Game has the most interesting comeback narrative and a director with genuine action credentials. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has the most beloved recent director-star combination and the goodwill of audiences who want exactly this kind of film.
Onam weekends reward films that match the mood of the audience in that specific moment. Screen allocation, advance booking velocity, and early word-of-mouth will determine how the weekend plays out. Right now, all three are live contenders.
