Mammootty and Mohanlal Together Again: Patriot Streams on ZEE5 from June 5

Eighteen years is a long gap between two stars who spent decades defining Malayalam cinema together. Patriot, directed by Mahesh Narayanan, brings Mammootty and Mohanlal back into the same frame in roles of equal weight — and it arrives on ZEE5 on June 5, across Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada.

The film centres on a surveillance programme called Periscope, designed to monitor citizens illegally. A group of socially responsible individuals move to stop it. Mammootty plays Daniel James, a scientific director. Mohanlal’s role hasn’t been detailed in official communications. Nayanthara appears in a surprise character that the production has kept under wraps.

The rest of the cast is substantial: Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, Revathi, Sarein Shihab, Jinu Abraham, Indrans, Darshana Rajendran, Grace Antony, Shaheen Siddique, Sanal Aman, Vineeth Thattil, and Geethi Sangeetha. Mahesh Narayanan wrote, directed, and edited the film — the same triple role he played on Malik and Take Off. Production is by Anto Joseph and K.G. Anilkumar, with C.R. Saleem and Subhash George Manuel as co-producers.

What Mammootty and Mahesh Narayanan Said

Mammootty described a pattern he has seen on many productions — grand plans announced at narration stage that quietly shrink by the time filming begins. Patriot went the other way. “When we got to filming, everything became bigger,” he said. Mohanlal added simply that he was happy to be part of a large film.

Mahesh Narayanan said he completed the writing first and then matched actors to characters — rather than writing around stars, which is the more common approach in a production of this scale.

The Mammootty-Mohanlal pairing has history that needs no introduction to any Malayalam cinema fan. They shared the screen together in over fifty films before the long gap. Patriot, a cyber-thriller built around mass surveillance and individual conscience, is a different register from most of what they made together in the 1980s and 1990s. June 5 will show whether the reunion carries the weight of the wait.
