The original Premalu, directed by Girish E D and starring Naslen K Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju, was a blockbuster that crossed the ₹ 100 crore mark at the box office. Buoyed by that success, the makers announced a sequel, Premalu 2, and the project seemed set to continue the story that had resonated so strongly with audiences.
However, according to producer Dileesh Pothan, the sequel has now been officially cancelled. In an interview with Club FM, Naslen clarified the reasons behind the decision. He said that technical challenges prevented the film from achieving a “perfect landing,” and the script never reached the level of perfection required to move forward. Because of these shortcomings, the team chose to halt the project rather than release a product that did not meet their standards. Naslen added that while the cancellation is final for now, there is a possibility the film could be revisited in the future if the right conditions arise.

Premalu and upcoming projects
The original Premalu was set against a Hyderabad backdrop, with Naslen and Mamitha Baiju playing the lead roles. The supporting cast included Shyam Mohan, Akhila Bharghavan, Sangeeth Prathap, Althaf Salim, and Meenakshi Raveendran. The screenplay was a collaboration between Girish E D and Kiran Joseph, while Vishnu Vijay handled the music. The film was produced by Bhavana Studios.
Naslen also mentioned other projects he is currently involved in. He is part of director Jithu Madhavan’s upcoming film Suriya 47, which stars Suriya in the lead role. He will also appear in Amal Neerad’s Bachelor Party D’eux, a stylish Malayalam venture, and in Mattancherry Mafia, a movie starring Mammootty and directed by Khalid Rahman.
In short, Premalu 2 was abandoned because the creators felt the script and technical execution fell short of the high bar set by the original. While fans may be disappointed, the decision reflects a commitment to quality over simply capitalising on a successful franchise. The door remains open for a possible revival, but for now the sequel remains shelved.
