Ranveer Singh Visits Chamundeshwari Temple, Offers Apology to Deity in Kantara Mimicry Case

Ranveer Singh arrived at the Chamundeshwari Temple in Mysuru on Tuesday morning before most devotees had reached the hill shrine — wearing a mask, unannounced, like any ordinary visitor. He was there at 7:30 AM. By the time the morning crowd began arriving, he had already left.

The visit fulfils a direction from the Karnataka High Court, which on May 5 quashed FIR proceedings against the actor after he submitted an unconditional written apology for remarks made at the Filmfare Awards in Goa. The court had directed him to visit the Chamundi deity within four weeks and make amends for his conduct.

“He came wearing a mask like any ordinary devotee when not many people were around,” said M.J. Roopa, Executive Officer of the Chamundeshwari Temple, per The Hindu. Singh introduced himself to temple priest Sunil, informed him he had come to offer apologies to the deity, and was led to the Garbha Gudi — the sanctum sanctorum — where he offered special prayers before leaving quietly.

What the Case Was About

The controversy stems from remarks Ranveer Singh allegedly made at the Filmfare Awards while speaking about Kantara Chapter-1. He is accused of imitating a Daiva — the sacred spirit possession tradition central to the film — and referring to it as a “devil.” A lawyer filed a complaint alleging his religious sentiments were hurt, which led to the FIR registration. The High Court accepted Singh’s revised affidavit with the unconditional apology and quashed the proceedings, with the temple visit as the condition attached.

The manner of the visit — early morning, masked, no prior intimation to temple authorities, gone before crowds arrived — suggests Singh wanted the obligation fulfilled without spectacle. The court’s condition has been met.
