The private life of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is back in public conversation, with unconfirmed reports suggesting a possible reconciliation with his estranged wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, just ahead of his 52nd birthday on June 22.
According to regional media reports on June 14 — none of them officially confirmed — the move has reportedly been driven by Vijay’s mother, singer and director Shoba Chandrasekhar, who is said to have stepped in as a mediator. She has played that role before in the family, having helped ease an earlier rift between Vijay and his father, director S.A. Chandrasekhar. Sangeetha, who had been living in London with their children Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha, has reportedly returned to Chennai, with the couple said to be spending time together to explore a way forward.
The divorce case so far
The reconciliation talk comes against the backdrop of an active divorce case. In February 2026, Sangeetha filed a petition to dissolve their 27-year marriage at the District Family Welfare Court in Chengalpattu, under the Special Marriage Act, followed by a separate petition seeking interim residence rights in their matrimonial home in Neelankarai, Chennai.
Her petition described a breakdown beginning in April 2021, citing an alleged extramarital relationship and the strain of public scrutiny through late 2024. The distance became publicly visible during the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, when Sangeetha and the children stayed away from Vijay’s campaign and were absent from his oath-taking ceremony.
The June 15 hearing
While fans have filled social media with hopes that the case might be withdrawn around his birthday, the legal process continues on its own track. The Chengalpattu court had asked both to attend a mandatory reconciliation counselling session on June 15. Given the security and logistical challenges of a sitting Chief Minister appearing at a district court, lawyers for both sides arranged for them to join electronically via video conferencing.
Analysts note that a settled personal life would help Vijay in the early months of his administration, especially as his TVK party prepares welfare drives, blood donation camps and educational aid programmes around June 22. Neither Vijay’s office nor Sangeetha’s lawyers have confirmed or denied the reconciliation reports, leaving the June 15 hearing as the clearest sign yet of which way things are heading.
