‘I Never Missed a Single One’: Telugu Actor Sunil on Watching Mammootty Films as a College Student

Telugu actor Sunil arrived at the Kattalan press conference this week with a Mammootty story ready. Speaking to reporters ahead of the film’s May 28 release, he described how, during his college years, he would watch every Mammootty Malayalam film that came dubbed into Telugu — without exception. “I never missed a single one,” he said, per Mathrubhumi.

The admiration eventually found an unexpected outlet. Years later, Sunil got to share a fight scene with Mammootty in Turbo — playing the villain opposite the star he had grown up watching. He recalled a specific moment from that shoot: a scene where his character, initially stern-faced, breaks into an unusual kind of crying. “When that shot was done, Mammootty sir said it was very good. I cannot forget that,” Sunil said.

What Sunil Is Here For

The press conference was for Kattalan, the Marco-universe action thriller directed by Paul George and produced by Shareef Muhammed under Cubes Entertainments. Sunil plays one of the key roles alongside Antony Varghese Pepe, Dushara Vijayan, and Kabir Duhan Singh. The film is described as a high-voltage action thriller about elephant hunting, revenge, and conflict — a significant tonal departure from anything in Sunil’s primarily Telugu comedy filmography.

Action choreography is by Kecha Khambackdi, whose credits include Ong-Bak 2, Baahubali 2, Jawan, Baaghi 2, and Ponniyin Selvan Part One — a resume that signals the scale of what Paul George is attempting. Ravi Basrur handles the background score, with B. Ajaneesh Loknath composing the songs. Screenplay is by Paul George, Joby Varghese, and Jero Jacob, with dialogues by Unni R.

For Sunil, Kattalan is a full Malayalam acting credit rather than a guest appearance — a market he has visited before but never quite planted a flag in. The Mammootty connection, both as a childhood influence and a recent co-star, gives his presence in this Malayalam production a neat circularity.
