The teaser for Unmadham is out, and it arrives with a premise that does something specific: it puts a police constable — not an officer, not a hero cop — at the centre of a case that has resisted explanation for years. Kunchacko Boban plays the constable, Lijomol Jose plays his wife, and the case file at the heart of the story is described as carrying supernatural characteristics. As the investigation deepens, per the teaser, the line between what is real and what isn’t begins to dissolve.
The film is directed by Kiran Das — one of Malayalam cinema’s most respected editors, making his directorial debut here. His editing credits include Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, Joji, Moothon, Romancham, Rosshan Andrrews’ Rosshan, Joseph, and Ilaveezhapoonchira, among others. He won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Editor for Ishq. The transition from cutting room to director’s chair is a familiar path in Malayalam cinema, and Kiran Das arrives at it with a resume that signals he understands how a film is assembled from the inside out.
The Shahi Kabeer Connection
The screenplay is written by Shahi Kabeer, a National Award winner who previously collaborated with Kunchacko Boban on Officer on Duty. That film’s procedural tension and moral complexity appear to have influenced what Unmadham is reaching for — a police story with an unsettling undercurrent rather than a conventional investigation thriller.
The supporting cast is substantial: Siddique, Sudhish, Vishakh Nair, Sabumon, Kottayam Nazeer, and Jijo Rajagopal among others. Cinematography is by Arjun Sethu, music by Mujeeb Majeed, and editing by Kiran Das himself.
Unmadham is presented by Gulshan Kumar, Bhushan Kumar, T-Series Films, and Panorama Studios — the third Malayalam production from Panorama Studios, following Drishyam 3. Produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak, the film is releasing soon, though a specific date hasn’t been announced at press time.
