Veteran Malayalam director Rajasenan has finally addressed why he and actor Jayaram stopped working together, ending years of fan speculation about one of Mollywood’s most successful director-actor pairings.
Through the 1990s, the two were a reliable hit machine. Films like Meleparambil Aanveedu, CID Unnikrishnan B.A., B.Ed., Aniyan Bava Chetan Bava and Kadinjool Kalyanam turned their family comedies into box office staples. Then, in the late 2000s, the collaborations simply stopped — and neither man explained why.
Speaking to the YouTube channel Movie World Media on June 13, Rajasenan gave his version of events for the first time. He pointed to two things: a change in how Jayaram approached scripts, and a series of skipped family weddings.
A shift in how they worked
Rajasenan said their partnership ran on trust. At their peak, he would describe a new script to Jayaram in a quick phone call — four or five sentences — and the actor would turn up on set without reading a full draft, seeing his dialogue for the first time on the day of the shoot.
That changed after Madhuchandralekha and Kanakasimhasanam, both released in 2006. According to Rajasenan, Jayaram began asking to review and adjust scripts and casting choices himself — something he had never done before. Rajasenan contrasted this with Dileep, who he said has a natural feel for script work.
The turning point, he said, was a phone call. When he asked why they were changing a formula that had worked for years, Jayaram replied, “Shouldn’t we start doing things differently from now on?” Rajasenan’s answer was blunt: “In that case, I am not part of this anymore. Let’s see each other later.” There was no shouting, he said, but the partnership was over.
The wedding snubs
The professional split spilled into their personal lives. Asked repeatedly online why he never attended the high-profile weddings of Jayaram’s children, Kalidas and Malavika, Rajasenan gave a simple answer: he was never invited.
He traced it back to his own daughter’s wedding years earlier. He said he sent Jayaram a formal invitation, and the actor chose not to come. After that, Rajasenan said, it was only logical that his own name dropped off the guest list — and he’s at peace with it.
Rajasenan ended the interview saying he has no interest in rehashing the fallout further.
