The Joju George action thriller Varavu will not open as planned. Just hours before its release, production house Olga Productions announced on social media that the film, set to hit theatres on Friday, June 12, 2026, has been postponed. The makers cited “unforeseen operational circumstances” and said the delay was meant to ensure the film reached audiences in the best possible shape.
The timing surprised the trade, given the strong advance interest the film had built up. Thanking audiences for the early bookings and support, the team said the delay is temporary and that the crew is working with distributors to finish the remaining post-production. A new worldwide release date is expected to be announced over the coming weeks.
A revenge story set in Malabar
Written by veteran screenwriter A.K. Sajan — known for thrillers like Chinthamani Kolacase, Red Chillies and Drona — Varavu is set in the Malabar region and follows Paulson, also called Polachan, a hardened murder convict.
The trailer lays out the premise: Paulson is granted a 10-day parole, and instead of lying low, he sets out to dismantle a local criminal network that he holds responsible for betraying his family and for the death of his close friend Willy. His return rattles his enemies, prompting underworld figures such as Yohan — played by Abhimanyu Shammi Thilakan — to try to get his parole cancelled before he can reach them.
A first-time pairing
Varavu marks the first collaboration between Joju George and director Shaji Kailas, who brings his fast-paced style to the material. Veteran actress Sukanya returns to the screen as Paulson’s elder sister, a nun who serves as the film’s moral centre and tries to pull her brother back from his pursuit of revenge.
Produced by Reji Prothasis and Nicey Reji with co-producer Jomy Joseph, the film leans heavily on its action. The team brought in a group of well-known stunt choreographers — among them Stunt Silva, Kalai Kingson, Kanal Kannan and Phoenix Prabhu — to stage its five major sequences, from vehicle chases to close combat.
The supporting cast includes Arjun Ashokan, Babu Raj, Saniya Iyappan, Azeez Nedumangad, Deepak Parambol and Sreejith Ravi, among others. S. Saravanan handled the cinematography and Shameer Mohammed the editing. Fans will now have to wait a little longer for the rescheduled release.
