The youth romantic comedy Dude is heading for a sequel. In a media interaction on June 9, 2026, debutant director Keerthiswaran revealed that he has worked out a full concept for Dude 2 and has already pitched it to the film’s lead, Pradeep Ranganathan.
According to Keerthiswaran, the idea got an enthusiastic early response. He said the new treatment keeps the same energetic, irreverent spirit that made the first film a hit, and that Dude 2 is being built as a direct continuation rather than a spin-off — following the central characters as they deal with early adulthood, family expectations and careers after the events of the first film.
A ₹100-crore starting point
The quick move toward a sequel reflects how well the original did. Produced on a controlled budget by Mythri Movie Makers — the banner’s entry into Tamil cinema — Dude crossed ₹100 crore. Written by Keerthiswaran, it introduced Agan Chidambaram (Pradeep Ranganathan) and his independent-minded cousin Kuralarasi (Mamitha Baiju), who run an event-planning outfit called “Surprise Dude.” Their easy friendship is thrown off course by an unexpected romantic confession, leading to a series of twists on familiar wedding-comedy tropes.
A big driver of the film’s reach was its soundtrack by composer Sai Abhyankkar. The track “Singari,” which marked Pradeep Ranganathan’s playback singing debut alongside Sai Smriti, did well on streaming and reels, building strong interest ahead of release. Reviews of the 139-minute film were somewhat mixed on its pacing and family scenes, but the commercial result was clear.
Schedules to work around
Keerthiswaran said the broad story is locked, while the writing team refines the individual character arcs before seeking a formal green light from the studio. The bigger challenge may be timing, given the busy diaries of the leads.
Mamitha Baiju is in a packed phase, with Tamil films like Jana Nayagan opposite Vijay and Venky Atluri’s Viswanath & Sons with Suriya, plus the Malayalam rom-com Bethlehem Kudumba Unit with Nivin Pauly. Pradeep Ranganathan, meanwhile, is producing a film with Mamitha in the lead and is reportedly lined up to act in a project produced by Atlee. Trade watchers expect a title announcement and first look for Dude 2 sometime in the late winter.
