What is Vettuvam about?
The makers describe an apocalyptic world where rival factions fight for power. The action is built on two traditional martial arts, Adimurai and Mallakhamb, and the press note says the cast trained in both for the film. GV Prakash Kumar returns as composer after working with Ranjith on Thangalaan (2024).
The Kerala angle
Vettuvam has more Malayali ties than its Tamil label suggests. Arya, one of the leads, was born in Trikaripur in Kasaragod, as he told Manorama Online in a 2017 interview. When the makers released the World of Vettuvam glimpse in five languages, Soubin Shahir voiced the Malayalam version, according to the press note. Arya fans in Kerala also have his romantic drama on the way, covered in our Hello Kadhal title teaser story.
Pongal 2027 clash: what is dated so far
Pongal falls in mid-January, the same week as Makaravilakku in Kerala. Here is how the festive window looks as of October 31, 2026.
- Vettuvam: Tamil, with a Malayalam version: Pongal 2027, no exact date (official)
- Harivarasanam: Harivarasanam, Malayalam, starring Saiju Kurup, directed by Rajesh Nair: January 15, 2027 (reported)
- Dharman and Seyon: Tamil: Pongal release reported, no official date
If both dates hold, Kerala screens will be split between a large-scale Tamil action film and a Sabarimala-season Malayalam release in the same week. That makes Vettuvam's Malayalam version, and how widely it opens in Kerala, the detail to watch.
Why this matters
Ranjith has a habit of long, careful productions, and Vettuvam was first announced at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, according to Cinema Express. A firm Pongal window is the clearest sign yet that the film is nearly ready. We will update this story when the makers announce the exact date and confirm the Malayalam release plan.
