Malayalam audiences who want to watch Ramayana in their own language will reportedly need 3D glasses for the first week. The Malayalam version of the first part plays only in 3D in week one, with 2D shows following a week later, distributor A.V. Anoop said at a press meet in Kochi, as reported by Onmanorama.
The film releases worldwide on November 5, the date the makers have carried on their official trailer posts and territory posters.
What to know before you book
Release date: November 5, worldwide (official)
Kerala rights: AVA Productions, as officially announced on the makers' poster on October 19. Onmanorama reports that E4 Entertainments and AVA are releasing it jointly in Kerala.
Malayalam bookings: Reportedly open on November 1. Hindi bookings are already open.
Malayalam formats: 3D only in week one, 2D a week later (reported, per A.V. Anoop)
Hindi formats: All formats from day one
Distribution elsewhere: Dharma Productions in North India and Sony Pictures Entertainment globally (official)
Why the Malayalam version is 3D first
The plan was shared at a press meet in Kochi on October 28, which E4 Entertainments' Mukesh Mehta and AVA Productions' A.V. Anoop attended, according to Onmanorama. Neither distributor has posted the format plan on its official handles yet, so treat it as reported until the bookings go live.
For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple. If you want the Malayalam dub in 2D, plan for the second week. If you want the film on day one in any format, the Hindi version is the route. Kerala also has a new premium option in the state's first Dolby Cinema screen in Fort Kochi.
Ramayana cast
The official trailer credits list Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Yash as Ravana and Sai Pallavi as Sita, with Ravie Dubey as Lakshman and Sunny Deol as Hanuman. Yash is also a co-producer. Malayalam actor Shobana also features in the film.
Our earlier story on the Malayalam trailer has more on how Yash's Ravana plays in the dub.
Runtime, makers and music
The film runs 195 minutes and carries a U certificate. It is produced by Prime Focus Studios with Monster Mind Creations, with VFX by DNEG and music by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman. Bookings for the Hindi version opened on October 20.
The full title is Ramayana: Part One, with Rise of a Legend as its international title.
