Malayalam cinema has found a second life for its classics. Studios are restoring old prints in 4K, remixing the sound in Dolby Atmos and sending them back to theatres for fans who grew up on TV reruns. Nayakan's re-release this week, confirmed in an official post from Hy Studioz, is the latest. Here is the full list so far, in release order.

7. Nayakan (2010): Lijo Jose Pellissery, Indrajith. Re-released October 30, 2026
1. Spadikam (1995)
- Director: Bhadran
- Cast: Mohanlal as Aadu Thoma
- Re-release: February 9, 2023, in 4K with Dolby Atmos
- Where to watch: the 4K remastered version is on the Matinee Now YouTube channel (checked October 30, 2026)
Bhadran funded the 4K restoration himself through Geo Matrix, with R. Mohan of Shogun Films as the original producer, as reported by The Indian Express. The story of a rebellious son and his strict schoolmaster father still lands.
Our take: Spadikam proved that a restoration could be an event rather than a nostalgia footnote. Aadu Thoma's swagger, the lorry, the Ray-Bans and the father-son fight play even bigger on a modern screen, and it gave every studio after it a template for how to sell an old film to a new crowd.

2. Devadoothan (2000)
- Director: Sibi Malayil
- Cast: Mohanlal
- Re-release: July 26, 2024, in 4K with Dolby Atmos by Hy Studioz
- Where to watch: the 4K remastered version is on YouTube via Kokers Entertainments (checked October 30, 2026)
Siyad Koker produced the musical mystery, and the makers announced the re-release date at a trailer launch.
Our take: Devadoothan is the comeback story of this list. A film many viewers missed in 2000 found its people 24 years later, helped by Vidyasagar's songs and a mood that feels closer to today's taste than to its own era. Few re-releases have felt so much like a second chance.

3. Manichitrathazhu (1993)
- Director: Fazil
- Cast: Mohanlal, Shobana, Suresh Gopi
- Re-release: August 17, 2024, in 4K with Dolby Atmos, distributed by E4 Entertainment
- Where to watch: no official streaming listing found (checked October 30, 2026)
Shobana announced the re-release date, as The New Indian Express reported. The psychological thriller is built around Shobana's Ganga and Nagavalli.
Our take: Few Malayalam films have a climax that audiences can recite, and this is one. The restoration let a new generation feel the Nagavalli dance in a packed hall, which is a very different thing from watching it on a phone. Shobana's performance is still the reason to go.

4. Chotta Mumbai (2007)
- Director: Anwar Rasheed
- Cast: Mohanlal
- Re-release: June 6, 2025, in 4K with Dolby Atmos by Hy Studioz, moved from May 21
- Where to watch: no official streaming listing found (checked October 30, 2026)
Mohanlal confirmed the date himself, as Cinema Express reported. The Fort Kochi gang comedy was the first of these to bring a pure fun film back.
Our take: Chotta Mumbai showed the trend was not only about prestige classics. Its jokes, friendships and Kochi street energy are made for a crowd that shouts back at the screen, and that shared noise is exactly what a phone or TV cannot give you. It is the most social pick here.

5. Kireedam (1989)
- Director: Sibi Malayil
- Cast: Mohanlal, Thilakan
- Re-release: July 10, 2026 (reported), in 4K with Dolby Atmos by Prasad Corp with Hy Studioz (reported)
- Where to watch: no official streaming listing found (checked October 30, 2026)
Written by A.K. Lohithadas, Kireedam follows Sethumadhavan, whose dream of joining the police is wrecked by one street fight.
Our take: This is the tragedy at the heart of Mohanlal's career, and it rewards a big screen because so much of it sits in his face. The Thilakan scenes, the knife and the final breakdown are as raw as ever, and a restored print makes them hit harder.
Watch the trailer:
6. Thenmavin Kombathu (1994)
- Director: Priyadarshan
- Cast: Mohanlal, Shobana
- Re-release: October 8, 2026, moved from October 1
- Where to watch: no official streaming listing found (checked October 30, 2026)
The film was scanned in 8K from a 35mm print and restored to 4K with an Atmos mix, as Prasad Corp says on its official site, working with Matinee Now. We covered it in our story on the Thenmavin Kombathu re-release.
Our take: The colours are the reason this one exists in 4K. Priyadarshan's village romance is all sunlight, fields and costume, and a careful restoration from film brings that back. Mohanlal and Shobana's easy comedy makes it the gentlest title on the list.
Watch the trailer:
7. Nayakan (2010)
- Director: Lijo Jose Pellissery
- Cast: Indrajith, Thilakan, Siddique
- Re-release: October 30, 2026, in 4K with Dolby Atmos by Hy Studioz and Saptha Records
- Where to watch: in theatres from October 30; no official streaming listing found (checked October 30, 2026)
Lijo Jose Pellissery's debut stars Indrajith as Varadanunni, a Kathakali artist seeking revenge. Read more in our story on the Nayakan 4K re-release.
Our take: Nayakan is the outlier, a cult debut rather than a superstar hit. That makes it the most interesting test yet: can a restoration build an audience for a film many people never saw? Lijo's style, long before Jallikattu, makes it worth the try.

Coming soon
Sankarabharanam (1980), K. Viswanath's Telugu musical with J.V. Somayajulu and Manju Bhargavi, is set to return to theatres in November in Malayalam and Tamil versions, Mathrubhumi reported. The re-release is in 4K with 7.1 sound, restored by Sreelal Devaraj. K.V. Mahadevan composed the music, with songs sung by S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, among others, including Sankara Nadasareerapara. The film won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. No exact date has been announced.
Dileep's Kalyanaraman (2002), directed by Shafi, has been announced for a 4K Atmos re-release by Hy Studioz, with a poster out on October 27 for the actor's birthday. It has no date yet, and an earlier January 2026 plan did not happen. Our Dileep upcoming movies guide has more.
Commissioner, Friends and Summer in Bethlehem are reportedly in the works too.
Why the 4K re-release trend works
Three things are driving it. First, a generation that knows these films from TV now has the money and the habit of going out together, and a re-release gives them a reason to share a favourite with friends or children. Second, sound matters: an Atmos remix changes how a climax or a song feels in a hall. Third, theatres have gaps between big releases, and a known title fills them at low risk. Premium screens such as Kerala's first Dolby Cinema add to the pull.
Where to start
If you want one, pick Kireedam for the performance. For pure fun with friends, go with Chotta Mumbai. For a film you probably missed, try Devadoothan.
If you are introducing someone younger to classic Mohanlal, start with Spadikam, since its father and son story needs no context, then move to Kireedam for the heavier drama. Fans of horror and mystery should go to Manichitrathazhu first and then Devadoothan, which share a haunting mood despite being very different films. For a lighter evening with family, Thenmavin Kombathu is the safest choice on the list. Nayakan works best for viewers who already like Lijo Jose Pellissery's later films and want to see where his style began.
One practical tip: re-release runs are often short, so check local listings in the first week rather than waiting for word of mouth.
