Malayalam cinema rarely rushes a sequel. Some of its best-loved follow-ups arrived 15 to 20 years after the original, with the same characters older, the stars greyer and the audience now bringing their children. With Bachelor Party D'eux due 14 years after the first film, here are the long-gap sequels worth revisiting, and where to stream both parts.
At a glance
- Bachelor Party (2012) to Bachelor Party D'eux (2026): 14 years, Amal Neerad
- Irupatham Noottandu (1987) to Sagar Alias Jacky Reloaded (2009): 22 years, K Madhu then Amal Neerad
- In Harihar Nagar (1990) to 2 Harihar Nagar (2009): 19 years, Siddique-Lal then Lal
- Mannar Mathai Speaking (1995) to Mannar Mathai Speaking 2 (2014): 19 years, Mani C Kappan then Mamas K Chandran
- Uppukandam Brothers (1993) to Uppukandam Brothers: Back in Action (2011): 18 years, T S Suresh Babu
- The King (1995) and Commissioner (1994) to The King and the Commissioner (2012): 17 years, Shaji Kailas
- Nerariyan CBI (2005) to CBI 5: The Brain (2022): 17 years, K Madhu
- Kilukkam (1991) to Kilukkam Kilukilukkam (2006): 15 years, Priyadarshan then Sandhya Mohan
- Inspector Balram (1991) to Balram vs Tharadas (2006): 15 years, I V Sasi
Streaming listings are as of Nov 4, 2026, from JustWatch India; platforms were not all confirmed on their own pages, so treat them as listed, not guaranteed.
1. Bachelor Party (2012) to Bachelor Party D'eux (2026)
- Gap: 14 years
- Director: Amal Neerad for both
- Where to watch: As of Nov 4, 2026, Bachelor Party is listed on Amazon Prime Video and JioHotstar. D'eux opens in theatres on November 19, 2026.
The 2012 film adapted Johnnie To's Exiled into a stylish Kochi gangster story with Rahman, Indrajith, Asif Ali, Kalabhavan Mani and Vinayakan. The sequel keeps the title, Amal Neerad and writer Unni R, but brings a new gang led by Kunchacko Boban and Naslen.
Our take: D'eux is the rare sequel that treats the original as a mood rather than a story to continue. That is a smart bet. The first film's cult grew from its look and music, not its plot, so a fresh cast lets Amal Neerad chase the same swagger without the baggage of a cast that has aged out of it.
2. Irupatham Noottandu (1987) to Sagar Alias Jacky Reloaded (2009)
- Gap: 22 years
- Directors: K Madhu, then Amal Neerad
- Where to watch: As of Nov 4, 2026, Irupatham Noottandu is listed on Eros Now. No current streaming listing was found for Sagar Alias Jacky Reloaded.
Mohanlal first played the gold smuggler Sagar Alias Jacky in the 1987 hit written by S N Swamy. Amal Neerad brought the character back in 2009 with a slick new look and Gopi Sundar's theme.
Our take: The longest gap on this list, and the clearest case of style over story. The 1987 film is still the one people quote. The reboot matters more as a marker of the new Malayalam action look than as a sequel, and it also explains why Amal Neerad is comfortable returning to old titles.
3. In Harihar Nagar (1990) to 2 Harihar Nagar (2009)
- Gap: 19 years
- Directors: Siddique-Lal, then Lal alone
- Where to watch: As of Nov 4, 2026, In Harihar Nagar is listed on JioHotstar and Eros Now. 2 Harihar Nagar is listed on Sun NXT.
The four friends, played by Mukesh, Jagadish, Siddique and Ashokan, returned in 2009 for a comedy thriller, and the sequel did well enough to spawn In Ghost House Inn in 2010.
Our take: This is the template for a nostalgia sequel done right. Lal did not try to recreate the 1990 jokes. He aged the gang honestly and let their chemistry carry the film, which is why it still holds up next to the original.
4. Mannar Mathai Speaking (1995) to Mannar Mathai Speaking 2 (2014)
- Gap: 19 years
- Directors: Mani C Kappan, then Mamas K Chandran
- Where to watch: As of Nov 4, 2026, Mannar Mathai Speaking is listed on Sun NXT and Eros Now. Mannar Mathai Speaking 2 is listed on JioHotstar.
The Urvashi Theatres trio of Mukesh, Innocent and Sai Kumar, first seen in Ramji Rao Speaking, came back for one more con caper in 2014.
Our take: The 2014 film works best for viewers who grew up on the first two. Siddique-Lal wrote the first two films; without them, the humour leans on recall, and that makes it a curiosity for fans rather than an entry point.
5. Uppukandam Brothers (1993) to Uppukandam Brothers: Back in Action (2011)
- Gap: 18 years
- Director: T S Suresh Babu for both
- Where to watch: As of Nov 4, 2026, Uppukandam Brothers is listed on Sun NXT. Back in Action is listed on JioHotstar.
The 1993 action drama about a feuding family of brothers got a 2011 follow-up from the same director, with Babu Antony and Baiju among the faces who came back.
Our take: Of all the pairs here, this one has the lowest profile, which makes it an interesting watch. Having the same director 18 years apart shows how Malayalam mass cinema changed between the early 1990s and the 2010s, from the pacing to the music.
6. The King (1995) and Commissioner (1994) to The King and the Commissioner (2012)
- Gap: 17 years from The King
- Director: Shaji Kailas for all three
- Where to watch: As of Nov 4, 2026, The King and the Commissioner is listed on ManoramaMAX and JioHotstar. No current listing was found for The King or Commissioner.
Shaji Kailas and writer Renji Panicker brought Mammootty's Joseph Alex and Suresh Gopi's Bharathchandran together in one film, a crossover of two 1990s hits.
Our take: A crossover rather than a direct sequel, and a bigger version of what Balram vs Tharadas tried six years earlier. Putting two star characters in one frame was a fine idea, even if the film itself could not match the punch of the originals.
7. Nerariyan CBI (2005) to CBI 5: The Brain (2022)
- Gap: 17 years
- Director: K Madhu for both
- Where to watch: As of Nov 4, 2026, Nerariyan CBI is listed on Eros Now. CBI 5: The Brain is listed on Netflix.
Mammootty's Sethurama Iyer, created with writer S N Swamy in Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (1988), returned for a fifth case in 2022 after a 17-year break.
Our take: The CBI series is proof that a character can outlive a gap that would end most franchises. Mammootty's hands-behind-the-back walk still lands, and with five films across 34 years, it is one of the longest-running detective series in Malayalam.
8. Kilukkam (1991) to Kilukkam Kilukilukkam (2006)
- Gap: 15 years
- Directors: Priyadarshan, then Sandhya Mohan
- Where to watch: As of Nov 4, 2026, Kilukkam is listed on JioHotstar. Kilukkam Kilukilukkam is listed on Sun NXT and Eros Now.
The follow-up to the Mohanlal and Revathi comedy brought back Jagathy Sreekumar's Nischal and Innocent, gave Mohanlal an extended cameo and built the story around a younger cast that included Kunchacko Boban and Jayasurya.
Our take: The cautionary tale on this list. Kilukkam is a near-perfect comedy, and a sequel with Mohanlal only in a cameo and without Priyadarshan was always going to struggle. Watch it for Jagathy, then go back to the original.
9. Inspector Balram (1991) to Balram vs Tharadas (2006)
- Gap: 15 years
- Director: I V Sasi for both
- Where to watch: As of Nov 4, 2026, Balram vs Tharadas is listed on ManoramaMAX. No current listing was found for Inspector Balram.
Mammootty's hard-hitting cop Balram, first seen in Aavanazhi (1986), met his own Athirathram character Tharadas in this 2006 crossover.
Our take: Like The King and the Commissioner, this is a crossover sequel built on two older films. It is a fun double role for Mammootty, and a reminder that I V Sasi was experimenting with linked characters long before the word universe entered film marketing.
