The release of Karuppu, starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, hit a serious snag on May 14, 2026, when financial disputes forced the cancellation of the 9 AM shows across Tamil Nadu. Director-actor RJ Balaji posted an emotional apology after the team was unable to resolve what he called “unavoidable” hurdles by the night of May 13 — prompting a wave of support from across the industry.

Several colleagues offered encouragement online. Dulquer Salmaan, then preparing for his own release Aakasamlo Oka Tara, wrote, “All will be good brother !! with you always !” Vignesh Shivan told Balaji, “This tears will change to happy tears in a matter of few hours bro!” Leo and Karuppu writer Rathna Kumar urged him to stay strong, saying “hard work & passion can never fail,” and actress Manjima Mohan expressed hope for a quick resolution.
The financial hold-up
Reports linked the delay to unsettled dues of more than ₹50 crore connected to production house Dream Warrior Pictures, reportedly involving financiers and distributors who had suffered losses on earlier projects, which led to a last-minute hold on the film’s digital screening keys. Unpaid location charges at EVP Studios near Chennai added to the strain. Producer SR Prabhu apologised on X at 1 AM, confirming the special shows were cancelled, and the makers issued refund details for affected ticket-holders.
A long-awaited reunion stalled
Karuppu reunites Suriya and Trisha for the first time in nearly 20 years, since their 2005 film Aaru. Suriya plays dual roles, Saravanan and Karuppuswamy, alongside Trisha, Yogi Babu and Indrans, with direction by RJ Balaji, music by Sai Abhyankkar and cinematography by GK Vishnu. The Tamil Nadu government had sanctioned the 9 AM shows, which made the cancellation all the more surprising. Despite the uncertainty over the afternoon screenings, the team remained hopeful of a 6 PM release as it worked to clear the remaining legal and financial issues.
