Kamal Haasan congratulates 'dear friend' Rajinikanth on Jailer 2, and Nelson replies: 'Coming from a legend'

A five-decade friendship that began with Apoorva Raagangal gets another chapter on release day.

Kamal Haasan has congratulated his "dear friend" Rajinikanth on Jailer 2. In a Tamil post on X on release day, he said he had heard reports that the film was a super hit around the world, and congratulated Rajinikanth, director Nelson, composer Anirudh and the Sun Pictures team.

Nelson replied by quoting the post. "Thank you so much sir, for your kind words," he wrote, adding that it meant a lot coming "from a legend like you".

Two directors join in

Other filmmakers posted too. Lingusamy wrote that, in 51 years of "Rajinism", he felt Jailer 2 was the film after Baashha that made the most of Rajini's aura, especially in the first half. Venkat Prabhu wrote that Jailer 2 "is simply" followed by a row of fire emojis, thanking Nelson, Anirudh and the team for "whatta experience".

A friendship older than both their stardoms

Kamal's post is the latest in a friendship that goes back five decades. Rajinikanth made his debut in K Balachander's Apoorva Raagangal (1975), which starred Kamal, and the two shared the screen again in Moondru Mudichu (1976).

Their recent careers have run in parallel too. Kamal's Vikram (2022), directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, was followed a year later by Rajinikanth's Jailer (2023), directed by Nelson.

The praise is warmer than the critics were. In our roundup of four Jailer 2 reviews, the two critics who gave ratings went with 2.5/5 and 3/5, and the four split on the film.
