Mithun Chakraborty's first answer to Jailer 2 was no. Rajinikanth told the story at the Jailer 2 Super Show, the promotional event now streaming on SunNXT, ahead of the film's October 15 release.

When the makers approached Mithun to play the villain, he turned it down flat, Rajinikanth said, according to reports. Mithun, whom he called a very good friend, did not like the idea of taking beatings from Rajinikanth on screen.

The two later met at an edition of the WAVES Summit. There, Mithun said he would do the film if Rajinikanth wanted him to, but on one condition: Rajinikanth's character must neither beat him up nor shoot him. Rajinikanth said he promised to check with the director, though he was sure Mithun was only joking.

An old pairing

The two actors have shared the screen before, in Ramesh Sippy's Bhrashtachar (1989), and Rajinikanth made a special appearance in Mithun's Bengali film Bhagya Debata. Jailer 2 also marks Mithun's return to Tamil cinema after more than a decade.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 brings back Rajinikanth as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. The cast includes Ramya Krishnan, SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mohanlal and Suraj Venjaramoodu, who plays a villain. The film logged ₹1.61 crore in Kerala pre-sales in the first hour, as our pre-sales tracker shows.
