The trailer for Akka is out, and for Malayalam viewers the most interesting thing about the Netflix series may be its cast list. Netflix and YRF Entertainment released the trailer this week, ahead of the show's premiere on October 30.

Series: Akka

Platform: Netflix

Premiere: October 30

Writer and director: Dharmaraj Shetty

Produced by: YRF Entertainment

Leads: Keerthy Suresh as Bhavani, Radhika Apte as Rudra

Setting: The fictional kingdom of Pernuru

Three Malayali names in one cast

Akka has three actors Malayalam audiences know well. Keerthy Suresh leads the show as Bhavani. Poornima Indrajith and Vishak Nair are also in the cast.

Keerthy is at the top of the bill, sharing the lead with Radhika Apte, who plays Rudra. Poornima and Vishak are part of a wider ensemble. Between them, the three give Malayalam viewers a reason to look past the trailer's star pairing and watch for familiar faces deeper in the cast when the show drops.

For Vishak, it is a busy week. He is also in the cast of Udumbanchola Vision, the Malayalam film that reached theatres on October 23, so he has a big-screen release and a streaming show inside eight days.

The rest of the cast

Beyond the two leads, the series features Tanvi Azmi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Anshumaan Pushkar and Monika Panwar along with Poornima and Vishak.

Who is behind it

Dharmaraj Shetty has written and directed the series. The story is set in Pernuru, a kingdom invented for the show, which gives the makers room to build their own world rather than tie it to a real place or period.

YRF Entertainment has worked with Netflix before. Its earlier shows and films on the platform include The Railway Men, Maharaj, The Romantics and Mandala Murders. Akka, with two women in the lead, is the latest addition to that list.

What the trailer gives away

The trailer picks up from the teaser, which we covered when it came out. Its key art places Keerthy and Radhika side by side above a group of women holding rifles, which sets the tone for a story about power in Pernuru. The makers have not released a full plot summary yet, and we have not filled one in here.

When and where to watch

Akka premieres on Netflix on October 30. You can watch the trailer in the post above. If you follow Keerthy, Poornima or Vishak, add this one to your list for next week.
