There will be no Hindi Drishyam 4, director Abhishek Pathak has said. In a recent interview, he said the team believes Drishyam: The Conclusion is the last part, because the franchise depends on its story and "the story has ended".
The comment follows Ajay Devgn's remark that the third film is the end of the franchise "for now", which had fans speculating about a fourth part, as with the Malayalam series.
A poetic ending
Pathak called the ending a love letter to the franchise. He said there could be plenty of story for a fourth film, but the team had to stop somewhere and this was a fitting close. He also hopes October 2 continues to be marked as Drishyam Day.
The film is closing in on about ₹500 crore worldwide, according to the report.
Different from the Malayalam Drishyam 3
Pathak said he cracked his story well before Jeethu Joseph wrote his Drishyam 3 and took nothing from the Malayalam film. Building on the response to his Drishyam 2, he chose to stay with the thriller format, while the Malayalam version leans towards the family drama around Mohanlal's Georgekutty.
He also explained why Tabu's IG Meera Deshmukh stays central to the story. In the Malayalam third part, the IG played by Asha Sharath takes a back seat, but Pathak said the Hindi films are the story of two families, the Salgaonkars and the Deshmukhs. Since the core conflict is the same across all three films, the team brought in a new threat in Jaideep Ahlawat to freshen things up, and gave Tabu's character whatever room that left.
Kamlesh Sawant's Inspector Gaitonde, one of the franchise's most loved characters, was brought back to do justice to the role, the director added. Gaitonde wasn't part of the Malayalam Drishyam 2. Pathak believes a little comic relief works in a thriller like this, and he credited Sawant's timing for making lines land as funny even when they aren't written that way.
