Short answer: Mammootty has acted in 16 Tamil films since his 1990 debut, and his next one, opening on November 20, will be his 17th. His Tamil run peaked in the 1990s, slowed after 2004 and has come back only twice since. Below is every film in order, with the director, the main co-stars and where to watch it.
Where to watch lines are as listed on JustWatch India on November 3, 2026.
Mammootty Tamil movies: quick facts
- Tamil debut: Mounam Sammadham (1990), directed by K. Madhu

- Busiest stretch: nine films between 1990 and 1999
- Last Tamil release: Peranbu, which opened in India on February 1, 2019
- Next: OM, in theatres worldwide on November 20, 2026
- Streams most often on: ManoramaMax and Prime Video (as of Nov 3, 2026)
1. Mounam Sammadham (1990)
- Director: K. Madhu
- Cast: Mammootty, Amala
- Genre: Legal thriller
- Where to watch: ManoramaMax (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: A lawyer takes up the case of a man who has been wrongly convicted, and slowly pulls apart the evidence that put him away.
Our take: The CBI Diary team of S. N. Swamy and K. Madhu brings its investigative style to Chennai. It was a smart way to introduce a Malayalam star to Tamil audiences, and the courtroom scenes still hold up.
2. Azhagan (1991)
- Director: K. Balachander
- Cast: Mammootty, Bhanupriya, Geetha, Madhoo
- Genre: Drama
- Where to watch: Prime Video and ManoramaMax (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Mammootty plays Azhagappan, a self made man whose life is tangled up with the women played by Bhanupriya, Geetha and Madhoo.
Our take: A softer, more playful Mammootty than Malayalam films often allowed. Balachander gives him plenty of room to charm, and the songs are the draw.
3. Thalapathi (1991)
- Director: Mani Ratnam
- Cast: Rajinikanth, Mammootty, Arvind Swamy, Shobana
- Genre: Crime drama, with music by Ilaiyaraaja
- Where to watch: ManoramaMax (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: A slum dweller becomes the right hand of a powerful gangster, Devaraj, while a district collector tries to break them up. The friendship is modelled on Karna and Duryodhana from the Mahabharata.
Our take: If you watch one film on this list, make it this one. Mammootty matches Rajinikanth scene for scene as Deva, and the friendship between the two is the reason Thalapathi is still quoted today.
4. Kilipetchu Ketkava (1993)
- Director: Fazil
- Cast: Mammootty, Kanaka
- Genre: Romantic comedy
- Where to watch: Not streaming currently (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Mammootty plays Chidambaram in a gentle romantic comedy from the Malayalam director Fazil, opposite Kanaka.
Our take: A minor film, and a reminder of how often Malayalam directors carried him across the border. The Ilaiyaraaja songs have outlived it.
5. Makkal Aatchi (1995)
- Director: R. K. Selvamani
- Cast: Mammootty, Roja, Ranjitha
- Genre: Political thriller
- Where to watch: Not streaming currently (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: A common man stumbles on a stash of money and uses it to become a politician.
Our take: Onmanorama credits this film with making him a fan favourite in Tamil Nadu. It is loud and very much of its time, but he sells the anger.
6. Pudhayal (1997)
- Director: Selvaa
- Cast: Mammootty, Arvind Swamy, with Aamani and Sakshi Shivanand reportedly in the cast
- Genre: Heist adventure
- Where to watch: Not streaming currently (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Mammootty plays Captain Vishwanath in a treasure hunt that also stars Arvind Swamy.
Our take: A fun, breezy entertainer that reunites him with his Thalapathi co-star. The songs, reportedly by Vidyasagar, carry much of the goodwill.
7. Arasiyal (1997)
- Director: R. K. Selvamani
- Cast: Mammootty, with Shilpa Shirodkar and Roja reportedly in the cast
- Genre: Political drama
- Where to watch: Not streaming currently (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Mammootty plays Chandrasekhar in a second political drama with Selvamani, two years after Makkal Aatchi.
Our take: Arasiyal tries to repeat the Makkal Aatchi formula and does not quite get there. Watch it only if you are a completist.
8. Marumalarchi (1998)
- Director: Bharathi
- Cast: Mammootty, Devayani, Ranjith
- Genre: Rural drama
- Where to watch: Not streaming currently (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Mammootty plays Rasu Padayachi, a man who works for his village and is caught in a bitter misunderstanding with a family from another village.
Our take: A hit that was reportedly remade in Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. He plays a rooted village elder without any of the city polish of his other Tamil roles.
9. Ethirum Puthirum (1999)
- Director: Dharani, who later made Ghilli
- Cast: Mammootty, Napoleon, Sangita
- Genre: Action drama
- Where to watch: Not streaming currently (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Mammootty plays Kannan in an action drama that also features Goundamani and Senthil.
Our take: It reportedly won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Third Best Film, and it is an early look at Dharani before his biggest hits. Rough in places, but lively.
10. Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000)
- Director: Rajiv Menon
- Cast: Mammootty, Ajith Kumar, Tabu, Aishwarya Rai, Abbas
- Genre: Romantic musical, with music by A. R. Rahman
- Where to watch: Not streaming in India currently, rechecked by hand on JustWatch India and WhichOTT (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: An adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Mammootty plays Major Bala, a former army officer who lost a leg in war and quietly loves the younger sister.
Our take: The most graceful performance on this list. His quiet scene with Aishwarya Rai is still the one people remember, and the Rahman soundtrack is a classic.
11. Aanandham (2001)
- Director: N. Lingusamy
- Cast: Mammootty, Murali, Abbas, Devayani, Rambha, Sneha
- Genre: Family drama
- Where to watch: Sun NXT (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Mammootty plays Thirupathi, the eldest of four brothers, who holds a joint family together as marriages bring new tensions.
Our take: Lingusamy's debut is warm and old fashioned in the best way, and Mammootty plays the elder brother with real restraint.
12. Junior Senior (2002)
- Director: J. Suresh (reportedly)
- Cast: Mammootty, with Hamsavardhan and Leena reportedly in the cast
- Genre: Romantic comedy drama
- Where to watch: Not streaming currently (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Mammootty plays Santhosh in a romantic comedy that pairs him with the younger Hamsavardhan.
Our take: One of his weakest Tamil films. It is here for completeness rather than as a recommendation.
13. Karmegham (2002)
- Director: S. P. Rajkumar (reportedly)
- Cast: Mammootty, with Radha Ravi and Abhirami reportedly in the cast
- Genre: Action drama
- Where to watch: AP International channel on Prime Video, listed as Karmegam (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Mammootty plays the title role in a rural action drama opposite Abhirami.
Our take: A routine mass film, saved by a couple of good songs, reportedly by Vidyasagar. Watch it if you enjoyed Marumalarchi.
14. Vishwa Thulasi (2004)
- Director: Sumathy Ram (reportedly)
- Cast: Mammootty, with Nandita Das reportedly opposite him
- Genre: Romantic drama, with music reportedly by Ilaiyaraaja and M. S. Viswanathan
- Where to watch: Not streaming currently (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Mammootty plays Vishwa in a quiet romance opposite Nandita Das.
Our take: A rare Tamil film of the time made by a woman director, with a gentle score from two masters. It deserves a streaming home.
15. Vandae Maatharam (2010)
- Director: T. Aravind
- Cast: Mammootty, Arjun, Sneha
- Genre: Action, shot in Tamil and Malayalam
- Where to watch: Sun NXT (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Two police officers, played by Mammootty and Arjun, try to stop terrorists crossing the border. It released in India on September 17, 2010.
Our take: A big, noisy bilingual that never finds a story worth its two stars. His next Tamil release came more than eight years later.
16. Peranbu (2019)

- Director: Ram
- Cast: Mammootty, Anjali, Anjali Ameer
- Genre: Drama
- Where to watch: Prime Video (as of Nov 3, 2026)
Story: Mammootty plays Amudhavan, a father who is left alone to care for his daughter after his wife leaves. The film premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2018 and reached Indian theatres on February 1, 2019.
Our take: His finest Tamil performance. Ram lets him play a helpless, ordinary man, and he never asks for sympathy.
17. OM (2026)
- Director: Rajkumar Periasamy
- Cast: Dhanush, Mammootty, Sai Pallavi, Sreeleela, Naseeruddin Shah, Indrans
- Genre: Action, with music by Sai Abhyankkar
- Where to watch: In theatres from November 20, 2026
Story: Mammootty plays Burma Karthikeyan, a smuggler also called Siya, as the character video above shows. Wunderbar Films and RTake Studios produce it.
Our take: Nothing on this list looks like Siya. A swaggering, grey shaded role opposite Dhanush gives the film real curiosity value for Kerala audiences.
Binu George Alexander Productions holds the Kerala theatrical rights, as Wunderbar Films confirmed on X on October 31. The makers' posts tag Dream Big Films, and reports say it will handle the Kerala release. Our OM Kerala rights story has the details.
Where to start
Start with Thalapathi for the star power, then Kandukondain Kandukondain and Peranbu for the actor. Add Aanandham for a family film and Marumalarchi for the 1990s mass hero. Then book OM.
