Shine plays Jeevan Thomas, a freelance journalist who goes missing. Months later, his family pushes for a deeper search, and a special investigation team under the Kottayam Crime Branch takes up the case. The trail leads them to an influential family in Kottayam.

The story comes from Nishad's own family. His father, P.M. Kunjimoideen, served for years as a Crime Branch SP and as Idukki SP, and retired as a DIG. Nishad built the film from notes on a case that his father kept in his police diary during his service. When the film released, Nishad said that the film mixes fiction with real incidents and that police officers were brought in to keep the investigation realistic. Nishad also plays a cop in the film.
